Memoirs of a Geisha is a poignant tale about a young girl name Chiyo. She and her sister are sold when their parents run into difficulties. She ends up in a geisha house. Initially, she is sent to geisha school, but after running away, she is caught and made to work as a chamber maid to pay her debts.

Her fortunes change when she meets a handsome stranger, the chairman, who buys her an ice cone. She has a strong crush on him and is motivated to be a geisha in order to be able to meet him again. Mameha takes her under her wing and trains her to be a great geisha.
